LALH Elects New President
In October, the LALH board of directors elected Daniel J. Nadenicek, ASLA, Dean of the College of Environmental Design at the University of Georgia, as its new president. “Dan is a highly respected author and landscape studies scholar, and he has been an engaged board member and advocate for LALH for several years,” says Robin Karson, the founder and executive director of LALH. “It will be a great pleasure to work with him in this new capacity.” In addition to writing a forthcoming LALH book about the conservation experiments of railroad tycoon Frederick H. Billings (1823–1890), Nadenicek is the editor of Critical Studies in the History of Environmental Design, an LALH book series launched in 2011. As president of the LALH, he will succeed Michael Jefcoat, who has presided for the past six years. Jefcoat, who has been a board member and generous supporter since 2002, will remain on the board. “It is my great pleasure to serve LALH because of its long and distinguished publication track record in landscape history,” Nadenicek says. At the College of Environmental Design, where he has served since 2008, Nadenicek has earned recognition for the breadth of his experience and interests.He holds bachelors and master’s degrees in both history and landscape architecture and is one of the first deans at the college to bridge these disciplines. In addition to administering CED, he is a teaching professor and researcher, serves on the Georgia National Register Review Board, and is the editor of Landscape Journal, the publication of the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture. He also remains active within the American Society of Landscape Architects, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the American Planning Association.
Nadenicek came to Georgia from Clemson University, where he served as department chair of Planning and Landscape Architecture and directed the PhD program in Environmental Design and Planning. Earlier, he was program coordinator for the Landscape Architecture programs at Penn State.
