About the Exhibition
Gwinn: A Portrait of the Garden

Gwinn: A Portrait of the Garden was organized for the Cleveland Botanic Garden in 1995 in conjunction with the publication of The Muses of Gwinn. The exhibition also traveled to the Chicago Botanic Garden and George Eastman House International Museum of Photography in Rochester, N.Y.

Gwinn: A Portrait of the Garden featured new black-and-white photographs of the remarkable Lake Erie estate. These haunting images by Carol Betsch, together with historical photographs from the Gwinn archive, illustrated the creation of this influential country place.

“Organized along two interpretive themes, the exhibition is designed to help contemporary audiences approach the estate as a living, changing entity rather than a historic artifact.” —Wolfe Publications

“Some of the most dramatic views in Betsch’s photographs are those involving the intersection of the garden and Lake Erie. Turbulent waters wash ashore at gates guarded by lions in one image. In another, a gazebo stands majestically at the end of the rounded wall, nicely positioned in relation to an outcropping of rock . . . . Dolphin Fountain in Wild Garden, Evening is a lovely study of texture and light. This image perfectly captures the combination of chaos and order that gives the garden at Gwinn its distinctive personality.” —City
